9-11 changed our nation. On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, honor heroes, victims, survivors and family members with a Remembrance Lily.
To some, 9-11 is simply a calendar date. To others, it is a day to remember as one of the only active terrorist attacks on American soil. Yet others of us had family or loved ones in NYC, possibly in/near the World Trade Towers. A handful more Americans had friends/family in the Pentagon and suffered losses on that same fateful day. And let us not forget Flight 93… passengers called loved ones midair to say goodbye after they were hijacked to who knows where. “Let’s roll.” Regardless of your experiences and/or memories, 9-11 is a day filled with emotions. We would like to provide an opportunity to create a new (more positive) memory on 9-11 through a tactile experience where you will cut, hammer and weld hot steel into a beautiful lily. Ultimately, the choice about what to do with it remains yours.
Overall 9-11 lily Plan
- Register in advance so we know how many to expect.
- On the evening of class, arrive in jeans and closed-toe shoes. Boots are best; leather tennis shoes are second best.
- After a safety orientation, begin the process of building a steel lily to take home.
parts of the lily
- Draw and plasma cut the head of the lily. Additionally, place the lily head in a hot forge to heat and form the flower’s head.
- Forge the lily stem using basic blacksmithing techniques. (Demonstrations and guidance provided.)
- Eventually, attach the lily head to the stem and then shape the leaf around the ensemble.
- Time permitting, paint and patina may be available.
